THEY RETURN VICTORIOUS
On Elk Hide
This painting is the petroglyph type of War Story design often found on the robes of warriors
in Buffalo days. The picture on the upper portion of the robe depicts victorious warriors
returning from a battle. They have fought for their nation and the helpless ones. They
return with war trophies as evidence of their victory.
The
lower portion of the robe, with Tail-bustles around a central altar, indicates the Tail Dance
Ceremony that could have been performed to obtain spiritual blessings prior to such a major
undertaking. The women, children, and old people must be protected if the Nation is to
survive.
The eagle fans in each corner bring power from the four directions. The outside border is the
trail taken to find the enemy.
Deer toe ornaments rattle, simulating the sound of walking buffalo. This is said to attract
game, assuring the people will never go hungry.
